A San Francisco affiliate of IATSE
Founded in 1937, Local B-18 serves the employment needs of those who work as back stage door keepers, ticket takers, ushers, box office staff and other key personnel.
Because financial resources are still very limited, notification of meetings and other important news can only be handled by e-mail and posting on this website.
The third quarterly general meeting of 2022 is now scheduled for Monday, July 18, at 6:30pm.
This meeting is being moved forward from the usual second Monday of the month due to a Giants' game being played that evening.
Further: during the April general meeting, members voted to allow for the possible suspension of the July meeting (as specified in the
constitution and bylaws of B18) should there be no pressing business for that meeting. An update will be posted here.
(Posted 4/22)
President Leontyne Mbele-Mbong has called for a Special Meeting in order told a ratification vote on a revised tentative agreement between the San Francisco Ballet and Local B18.
In accordance with B18's bylaws and constitution, voting will be the only order
of business on
Friday, April 29 - 4:15pm to 6pm and
Sunday, May 1 - 11:00am to 12:15pm
at the Taxi Ramp entrance to the Opera House (above Grove Street, between Van Ness and Franklin).
IATSE requires that voting can only be done in person and, in order to vote, members must be in good-standing.
For a summary of the tentative agreement, please e-mail
Member Services.
If you have any questions, please contact the Business Agent, Johnny Moreno, at
415-974-0860 or by
e-mail.

IATSE has announced that the union would donate $25,000 to support urgent humanitarian aid for Ukrainians. The donation, made through the International and European Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), will provide essentials like food, water, medical, and hygiene supplies to help those who desperately need assistance in Ukraine. Support is also being provided in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, neighboring countries that are supporting an increasing number of Ukrainian refugees.
B18 members can go to
iatse.net/ukr to show solidarity with Ukrainian workers. Amounts are requested in Euros,
but you can go
here to get a conversion from dollars. Right now, a 20-Euro contribution would mean a payment of about
$23.23 (+ any Euro-conversion fee your banking/credit company might charge).
(Posted 3/15/2022; revised 4/5)
At the second quarterly meeting on April 18, two matters came up for consideration by those attending:
On a motion to possibly suspend the July general membership meeting in line with provisions of the constitution and bylaws, should there be no pressing business, the vote was 11 members voting in favor, 1 opposed. The motion carried.
On a motion to at least temporarily cap the late fee on dues for 2022 at the current 11-weeks late
($22),
the vote was 10 members voting in favor, 4 opposed. The motion carried.

B18 reports with sadness that news has reached the Local's office of the death of two long-time members in February.
Sister Mary Mercurio was a loyal and reliable part of Local B18 for over 40 years. She worked with the Patron
Services team at the San Francisco Symphony until her retirement in 2020.
Brother Tom Carroll joined B18 as a Candlestick Park usher. A section supervisor at Oracle Park for the Giants
at the time of his death, Tom was involved with the Local for 30 years.
Our sympathy goes out to the families, friends, and co-workers of these two very valued members.

Membership fees are annual base dues ($72), payable by January 31,
and [not "or"]
payment of 1% on wages from venues within the jurisdiction of the Local, payable at least quarterly.
Right now, the payment of annual dues is
$72 + $22 late fee = $94, for 11 weeks late.
At the April general meeting, members voted to temporarily freeze the late fee at 11 weeks, to help those who have fallen behind.
Anyone joining the Local should contact Member Services before paying their dues, or any fees.
As a convenience, members may pay their base dues online using credit/debit cards. Click here. (Online payments are subject to a fee to recover what the Local is charged for online processing.)
The 1% wage assessment usually can be deducted by your employer from each paycheck and sent to B18, if you request it. Assessment is currently applied to B18 earnings up to $20,000 in any calendar year. For more information, click the Membership Fees link in the navigation bar to the left.
1% assistance:
Member Services
will calculate the amount owed if you supply a JPEG or PDF of your W-2 form(s) from your B18 employer(s).
You'll get an e-Invoice in return so that you can pay that amount online. Or you can send a check/money-order to the office.

Now there is a new--and we hope improved--form for members to register and update interest in getting other work. Try it! Fill out and submit this streamlined Work Referral Form online.
B18 will use your information when asked by employers for lists of members who may be interested in open positions or shifts
If you submitted a previous version of this form, B18 may continue to use that data at least through August of this year. But consider updating your availability now.
And if you want to try this relatively simple, flexible way of registering work-interest with your union, please do! Contact Member Services with any questions.
One last thing: please remember to update Member Services when you start working for a new employer or stop
working for an old one. Thanks!
(Updated 1/18/2022)
These B18 employers have asked the Local to post links to job openings they have for union members. Clicking on a link will provide the job description and a way to begin the application process.

On January 8, the annual newsletter went out by e-mail from President Leonytne Mbele-Mbong. It is now available here as well.
The e-mail also included the announcement that the January general membership meeting, scheduled for January 10, was being postponed for a week (see above), and would be held online.
Please let Member Services
know if you didn't get this e-mail: your record in the office may need to be updated.

The Special Meetings of December 16 and 18 regarding the ratification of a proposed contract between San Francisco
Ballet and Local B18 resulted in a tie vote, with 14 members approving the proposal and 14 members not. A majority
being needed, the contract was not ratified and negotiations will continue.
